Quercia Setta Overpass

Engineer: Riccardo Morandi
Engineering firm: Sogene
Material: reinforced concrete
Year of construction: 1958-1959
Static scheme: cantilever shaped-like simple beam
Driving down from Bologna, the route follows the Rhine valley for a short distance and then deviates to the Setta valley, along the eastern slopes of Monte Sole.
The curved and very slender piers of the overpass look like overlapping colonnades of a theatrical scenery. On these lay the beams which are cast on the ground and then raised with pulleys: the profile of the deck is at no point horizontal.
Each structural piece is designed from scratch: shaped pieces are reduced to a minimum, separated and connected by clearly visible joints (carefully designed). This is a huge piece of furniture in scale with the Apennines.
