The Aglio Overpass is located on the section of the A1 between Bologna and Florence, a very complicated route in which the main character, among the many bridges we find, is reinforced concrete. As a whole, the structure of this overpass is the largest arch of the highway and has a very peculiar feature; in fact, it has two identical arches placed side by side and connected by an upwind system. The arches were also thought to be hollowed out on the sides, so as to improve their shape according to the properties of the material.
The bridge isn’t famous only for its big futuristic structure, but also for having been raised thanks to the disposal of a huge iron scaffolding which, quickly moved with a rail system, allowed to support, one by one, the casting of all the arches, achieving excellent results: the Innocenti scaffolding. In fact, to dismantle the scaffolding used to build the first arch and later rebuild it to make the second arch, would have taken about three months; while the simple shifting of this structure could be carried out in just 9 hours!

Between 1991 and 1993 the overpass underwent a general restructuring; from a structural layout of 35 supported spans, it changed into 3 continuous beams. The structure was also adjusted seismically using seismic isolation which provides a 50% reduction of seismic forces.

A movie overpass!

Works were sometimes organized with frantic shifts but led to a wonderful result, so much so that the event became the subject of a documentary film, "Viadotto sull’Aglio", released in 1960, directed by Carlo Nebiolo, and awarded in various film exhibitions.
The system used to reinforce the viaduct over the Aglio river also inspired the engineer Giulio Krall, who
designed the bridges over the Gambellato and Merizzano rivers.
Today, this magnificent structure is still clearly visible; in fact, traveling on the Variante di Valico from Milan to Naples, you can admire it by simply looking to your left.
