Bridge over the Arno River in Incisa:                        impossible and beautiful

Engineer: Silvano Zorzi and Giorgio Macchi
Engineering firm: Astaldi
Span: 104m
Material: prestressed reinforced concrete (BBRV patent)
Year of construction: 1962-1963
Static scheme: hyperstatic portal arch

The engineer Silvano Zorzi designed a bridge with two identical portal arches placed side by side. Zorzi gave the prestressed concrete shapes a clean outline which confers the thin membrings a slender and elegant profile while minimizing the mass of the building.
This high-engineering work, located in a narrow crossing of the Arno River, was assigned to the Astaldi company, one of the most promising firms that stood out during the construction of the Autosole.
The use of the Innocenti staffolding, arranged like a folding fan, was also fundamental along with other innovative systems.

Acrobatic worker

The bridge was built thanks to a "swinging derrick Cruciani Blondin", a cable system suspended from towers, that allowed workers and materials to be transported.
The support towers, which are usually fixed to the ground, were turned into "swinging" towers for this construction site thanks to hinges that allowed their movement.
This particular system thus allowed the most agile workers to reach the most inaccessible points of the
bridge.
